Update Your IDE to Restore Agent Activity in Copilot Usage Metrics
Recent changes to GitHub Copilot agent session tracking caused missing or misattributed activity metrics in several IDEs. A fix is now available for Visual Studio Code users, with updates for other IDEs planned by November 2026.
What changed?
Several major IDEs recently migrated Copilot agent session tracking to the Copilot SDK. During this transition, sessions from affected IDE versions did not identify their source environment, leading to incorrect or missing agent activity in Copilot usage metrics. As a result, these agents' activities were either excluded from reports or, in some cases, misattributed to Copilot CLI usage. Visual Studio Code 1.139.0 and later contains a fix for this issue. Updates for Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Xcode are planned for release by November 2026.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
If you or your organization relies on Copilot's agent activity metrics for reporting, analysis, or compliance, your usage dashboards and APIs may have shown inaccurately low or misattributed results since this change. This directly affects teams that monitor lines of code, agent interaction rates, or IDE-specific adoption. Historical activity from affected clients cannot be backfilled, as the data cannot be accurately reconstructed.
What can the developer do now?
To restore accurate agent activity attribution in Copilot metrics, update your IDE or Copilot extension as soon as the relevant patch is available. Visual Studio Code users should upgrade to version 1.139.0 or later immediately. Users of Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse, or Xcode should plan to update to the first release after October-November 2026. Metrics will only be correct for activity recorded after the update. In the meantime, ensure IDE telemetry is enabled and not blocked by network controls. Monitor your organization's per-user reports to identify outdated clients and prioritize those environment upgrades.
