Ray Train Deep Learning Container Brings Simplified Distributed Training to EKS with EFA
AWS has released the Ray Train Deep Learning Container (DLC) for public use, providing a pre-built environment for distributed PyTorch training with Ray on Amazon EKS. The image integrates CUDA, NCCL, EFA, and major ML frameworks, removing the overhead of container maintenance and configuration for GPU clusters.
What changed?
AWS has published the Ray Train Deep Learning Container (DLC) to the Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR) Public, making it immediately available to all developers without the need for authentication or building custom images. The container includes an integrated, tested stack for distributed PyTorch training with Ray's training libraries, CUDA, cuDNN, NCCL, EFA drivers, DeepSpeed, flash-attn, Transformer Engine, PyTorch Lightning, and Hugging Face libraries. The container automatically checks the host's NVIDIA driver and enables CUDA forward-compatibility if required. One image is used for Ray head and worker roles, and for both training and inference workloads.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
Container management has historically been a significant blocker for scaling distributed training workloads, due to the need to align CUDA, driver, NCCL, and networking dependencies. With this container, developers do not need to build or maintain their own training images, eliminating a common barrier to scaling training jobs across multiple GPUs and nodes. All Ray nodes (head and workers) can use the same image, simplifying cluster operations. Public availability means access is immediate and automated, reducing setup friction. The container has been tested to ensure high-performance EFA networking for inter-node communication, improving training speed and reliability. This update mainly benefits teams running distributed deep learning on AWS, particularly those adopting Ray on EKS.
