ChatGPT Desktop App Now Supports Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud (US)
The ChatGPT desktop app now allows controlled local deployment using Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud (US), supporting model inference via organization-managed AWS credentials for strict data residency and zero-data retention requirements.
What changed?
The ChatGPT desktop app now supports model inference routed through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud (US-West). It can be configured for local, organization-controlled deployments using AWS-managed credentials and strict network restrictions. The app supports authentication via Amazon Bedrock API keys, AWS SDK credential chain, and AWS SSO. This update allows developers in regulated environments to use both Work (for complex tasks) and Codex (for software development) with OpenAI models via AWS GovCloud infrastructure.

Why does it matter to an everyday developer?
This integration permits developers in highly regulated sectors or those facing strict data residency rules (such as government or defense contractors) to use ChatGPT's coding and productivity workflows on managed endpoints. Model inference and data processing remain within the selected AWS Region, and a zero-data retention mode can be enabled to further secure sensitive information. No seat licenses or per-developer commitments are required; organizations pay only per token used. Security controls are aligned with AWS identity policies and the user's compute environment, rather than OpenAI workspace-level controls.
